WHO SMOKES?
Researchers are curious about issues
related to smoking. In a review of 7547 patients who underwent back surgery, they found
that 18% were smokers. The researchers noted that compared to the non-smokers, the smokers were younger, male,
nondiabetic, and nonobese. These patients who have coronary artery disease were more likely to be
smokers. Smokers who underwent lumbar spine back surgery came to their healthcare provider more with leg pain than
back pain and disability. Their employment, insurance/uninsured, and education
status were also related to smoking status. Fascinatingly
though, smoking status didn’t affect the
disability status at a year after back surgery. (1) Altering
such risk factors work just as well for smokers and nonsmokers
luckily. Spinal Care Clinic would help a Burlington and Hamilton
smoker who has Burlington and Hamilton back pain create a plan
to stop smoking.
SMOKING’S EFFECTS ON THE BODY
The body gets what is good for it…and what
is not. Smoking isn’t. Examining 2307
smokers and non-smokers, researchers discovered that smoking is most
strongly associated with spine pain. Headache,
trunk pain and limb pain followed. Active smoking is associated
with pain in every part of the body. The spine and head take
the force of the painful effect though. If a smoker
doesn’t like pain, you’ll want to consider stop smoking! (2) Spinal Care Clinic is with you to back
your effort to stop smoking when you’re
ready.
