Fall risk and nutrional status. What
is the link? It makes
sense when you think about it. Poor nutrition leads to muscle and
weight loss. Spinal Care Clinic carefully checks our
older Burlington and Hamilton chiropractic patients at risk for falls, paying
special attention to their nutritional status. Spinal Care Clinic cares about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers attempted to describe
the relationship between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older people
who reside in community settings. They found that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment maintained
a 45% higher risk of experiencing at least 1 fall. (1)
Confirming BMI and nutritional status is pretty
simple to do. Spinal Care Clinic does it to protect
our Burlington and Hamilton chiropractic patients!
Burlington and Hamilton FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead focusing on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status has a role,
too. Malnutrition leads to weight loss which prompts
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a ripple effect! A recent study documented
that malnutrition was significantly linked with high fall risk
according to a few leading fall risk assessment
tools (particularly the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Poor nutritional status in older adults especially those with a history of falling puts them at risk of poorer recovery from a fall.
Almost a third of community-dwelling adults with a fall history were either currently malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Improving the nutritional status of those who have fallen enhanced their physical
performance. (3) Spinal Care Clinic knows nutrition and is ready
to assist our at-risk patients improve theirs!
