Burlington and Hamilton Chiropractic Care May Better for Vertebral Fractures than Vertebroplasty

Spinal Care Clinic suggests curcumin for pain reduction and Burlington and Hamilton conservative care for vertebral fractures instead of vertebroplasty.

NO VERTEBROPLASTY FOR VERTEBRAL FRACTURE

Burlington and Hamilton Chiropractic Option for Conservative Care

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures hurt. Often initiated by a fall or injury, a Burlington and Hamilton vertebral fracture (compression fracture) happens when a vertebra – a bone of the spine - will dissolve on itself, causing the bone to reduce in size.  Researchers and doctors found a method to “fix” these vertebral fractures by adding a cement type compound into the collapsed bone to return it to its usual size again. This procedure is known as vertebroplasty. It made sense. However, a recent Cochrane Review study of results over numerous years reveal that high- to moderate-quality evidence shows no important benefit of vertebroplasty for acute or subacute osteoporotic vertebral fractures and cautions of its potential for harm. Undesirable side-effects from vertebroplasty include osteomyelitis, cord compression, thecal sac injury and respiratory failure. (1) How does chiropractic care conservatively handle a vertebral compression fracture? Consult Spinal Care Clinic. The appropriate time after injury to include gentle Cox® Technic to the treatment plan for a vertebral fracture (generally around 6 weeks with careful tolerance testing) will be determined. In the interim, there are conservative options like bracing, good posture (with even a little extension), pain medications, etc., to lessen the pain. Your Burlington and Hamilton chiropractor at Spinal Care Clinic is here to help!

Pain-relieving curcumin may be a good addition to the Burlington and Hamilton chiropractic treatment plan.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try Curcumin!

Curcumin is a plant-derived natural compound from the rhizome of the turmeric (curcuma longa) plant. It is effective for treating and preventing a variety of diseases, particularly age-associated ones like cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation and infection. (2) What an amazing polyphenol! It’s even shown to be superior to corticosteroids for reducing inflammation and to be beneficial alone and/or in combination with antibiotics for being antibacterial. (3,4) With so many remarkable benefits, curcumin may be a logical supplement to your nutrition routine. Let us talk about it at your next Burlington and Hamilton chiropractic visit at Spinal Care Clinic!
