Burlington and Hamilton CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is
a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal
wall. It is a deep muscle and typically considered a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to
the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When
contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion
of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being examined about
the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual
layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor
control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) Spinal Care Clinic
and you can talk about how your spine may benefit from such
exercise at your next Burlington and Hamilton chiropractic visit to Spinal Care Clinic.
