Spinal Care Clinic shares these NEW back pain guidelines

Spinal Manipulation as a First Option
The American College of Physicians suggests

pain.
Spinal manipulation is specifically named as one
option.

Spinal Manipulation for Acute
Back Pain
The Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA) published a review study of randomized clinical trials –
high level research studies – about
spinal manipulation for relief of acute
back pain (back pain up to 6 weeks in duration). This review shows
that spinal manipulation delivers modest improvement in
pain and function with no serious adverse effects.
(2)
JAMA also printed an editorial by the esteemed
medical doctor and author, Richard Deyo, MD, about spinal manipulation for back
pain incorporating Paige’s study. The editorial explains
that spinal manipulation treatment for acute
low back pain is fitting.
Its use is in line with the American College of Physicians review and
subsequent guideline. Spinal manipulation allows modest
improvement in pain and function in the short-term compared
with sham manipulation, usual care and other treatments. And of note, Deyo highlights that, of the trials reviewed by Paige et al and
the American College of Physicians, none suggested that spinal manipulation care
was less effective than conventional medical care (drugs, rest, etc.). SMT
proved equal to or exceeded conventional care.
(3)
Spinal Manipulation for Older Adults
An update to the evidence-based recommendations on the best
practices for chiropractors to follow when caring for older adults with back
pain reports that spinal manipulation contributes to the relief and overall
